SAIL is an inspiring, five-yearly nautical event, and the biggest free event in the Netherlands. The event is based around Tall Ships, yachts and maritime heritage boats from all over the world and takes place along Amsterdam’s IJ waterway from August 12 to 16.

Yes, the harbour master will introduce special rules, such as speed limits, to ensure safety. You will be able to access these on this website by mid-2020.

The IJ-haven is a designated event space and will be open to private boats with a maximum length of 12 metres and no more than 12 people on board.

Privately owned boats may have a maximum of 12 people on board.

You will need to register your plans with SAIL in advance and you will be given conditional access, such as a time slot. You will need a SAIL flag to enter the area, which you will be able to buy via SAIL.nl.

It is extremely busy on the IJ and North Sea canal during SAIL and both the organisers and harbour master expect all participants understand the rules and are experienced sailors. You will be able to check the rules on this website in mid-2020.

SAIL Amsterdam 2020 is the biggest free event in the Netherlands and SAIL Event Partners is the only organisation allowed to organise commercial cruises, unless otherwise agreed. If you would like to offer commercial cruises anyway, please get in touch with schepen@saileventpartners.nl

Yes. You will need to have a flag and to have made an agreement on fees.

Private boats may be up to 12 metres long. Commercial boats must be no longer than 45.99 metres, measured at water level.

They will be available from a variety of sources in the spring.

Boats without a partner agreement with SAIL will not be allowed to show any form of advertising or other commercial message. SAIL Amsterdam 2020 is the biggest free event in the Netherlands and is only possible thanks to the support of our partners, whose interests we wish to protect.

Regular through shipping should report to the Mercuriushaven and the Oranjesluizen and will be led through the SAIL area in convoy under the leadership of an official
