Story

Anna af Sand

Living heritage from the fjords

The Anna af Sand is one of the oldest ships joining SAIL 2025. This sturdy Norwegian coastal sloop was built in 1854 and spent many years sailing the rugged Norwegian coastline as a trading vessel. With her wooden hull, modest 26-meter length and traditional rigging, she represents an era when wind and craftsmanship set the course.

Since 1972, Anna af Sand has been lovingly maintained and sailed by a dedicated group of volunteers. Today, she is operated by the Stavanger Maritime Museum as a sailing museum ship — fully in line with the vision of her last private owner, shipowner Toralv Smedvig, who gifted her to the museum.

In 2025, she will sail into Amsterdam for the very first time — a special moment. At 171 years old, Anna af Sand is a rare example of living maritime heritage. During SAIL, she offers visitors a unique glimpse into 19th-century sailing: pure, handcrafted and in harmony with the elements.
