Story

Dar Szczecina

A Polish Champion of the Seas

Dar Szczecina was built in 1969 in Szczecin, Poland. With a mahogany hull, teak deck, and aluminium mast, this elegant sloop was designed from the outset to perform in the sailing world.

In its early years, Dar Szczecina competed in numerous prestigious regattas both at home and abroad. Highlights include first place in the 1969 International Regatta of the Gryf Pomorski, victory at the 1970 Ostseewoche, and participation in the Cowes–Cork Regatta, Kieler Woche, the Round Gotland Race, the Bermuda Regatta, and the Sailing Olympics in Kiel.

In 1976, the ship represented the city of Szczecin in the sailing parade marking the 200th anniversary of the United States. Since then, Dar Szczecina has been a regular participant in The Tall Ships Races, often placing highly in classes C and D—and even achieving overall victories.

In recent years, the ship has completed two major expeditions: one from Szczecin via Norway, the Shetland Islands, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland; and a second voyage to the North Cape of Norway.

Dar Szczecina is crewed almost entirely by young sailors participating in a maritime training and youth programme, ensuring that seafaring skills and the love of the sea are passed on to a new generation.

Dar Szczecina first visited SAIL Amsterdam in 2010 and will return in 2025 to inspire a new generation of sailors.
