The City of Amsterdam

Amsterdam has been a key part of SAIL since the very first edition, which took place in 1975 against the backdrop of the city’s 700^th anniversary celebrations. 88% of Amsterdammers have visited SAIL since its foundation, giving the event an average score of 8.1 out of 10. SAIL also provides a significant boost to the local economy. SAIL is now the biggest freely accessible event of The Netherlands.

Royal Navy

SAIL and the Royal Navy have had a close relationship since the early days of the event. Visitors can explore a variety of navy ships during the event. Crew will also be available to talk about their work ensuring the Netherlands’ maritime safety, combating piracy and the drugs trade, and supporting peace missions.

North Sea Canal municipalities: Haarlemmermeer

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer, home to Schiphol airport and the busy town of Hoofddorp, has had a key role in the Netherlands’ relationship with ships and the sea. SAIL visitors are invited to visit the Cruquius steam pump, a Unesco heritage site which tells the story of the Dutch battle with water.

North Sea Canal municipalities: Zaanstad

Zaanstad’s industrial traditions include shipbuilding and sail-making, making the city on the north flank of the canal a perfect part of SAIL. Zaanstad and its surrounding countryside offer great places to picnic and to sit on the waters’ edge and watch the ships go by.

North Sea Canal municipalities: Velsen and IJmuiden

IJmuiden is both a North Sea seaside resort and busy port with harbours devoted to fishing, industry and pleasure boats. The beaches are wide and welcoming and there is plenty to explore, including a WWII bunker complex. IJmuiden is also the starting place for the SAIL-In.

The town of Beverwijk and seaside village of Wijk aan Zee have a combined 40,000 residents and form part of the IJmond alliance. Beverwijk is a bustling town with good connections to nearby cities and is perhaps best known for De Bazaar, the biggest covered market in Europe.

Port of Amsterdam

Amsterdam’s Port Authority is responsible for managing the Amsterdam port area and its economic development. With annual throughput of some 95 million tonnes, the port is the fourth biggest in Europe, and provider of 59,000 jobs. During SAIL, the Harbour Master division is responsible for regulating shipping and ensuring the safety of all waterborne events.

Noord-Holland is the provincial authority which includes Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal municipalities. It has a key role in making SAIL a unique event for everyone.

SAIL Sociëteit Amsterdam

SAIL Sociëteit Amsterdam is a club for companies which have close ties to SAIL. Its main role is to help ensure SAIL is a success every five years and its members support the SAIL Amsterdam Foundation on a commercial, professional and creative basis.

SAIL Academy

The SAIL Academy offers internships, research opportunities and volunteer roles and is an important part of SAIL’s mission to help people make the most of their talents. The Academy works closely with schools and colleges to make sure as many youngsters as possible can experience SAIL across a wide variety of disciplines.

2,000 VOLUNTEERS DRESSED IN TOMMY HILFIGER DURING SAIL AMSTERDAM 2020

Amsterdam, 05 December 2019 – The American company PVH, parent company of clothing brand Tommy Hilfiger, commits itself to SAIL Amsterdam 2020. PVH Europe, based in Amsterdam, includes the worldwide headquarters of fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger and the European offices of Calvin Klein. As part of the partnership, PVH Europe provides more than 2,000 SAIL volunteers with Tommy Hilfiger clothing that makes them clearly recognizable during the tenth edition of SAIL in Amsterdam.
