Story

Ecolution

The ship Ecolution was built between 2007 and 2010 for the late Wubbo Ockels, the astronaut, and his wife Joos. Wubbo had great ideas for building a sustainable ship that could be sailed short-handed. With Wubbo's highly technical and mathematical knowledge, it was built with great care. At that time, the ship still had two diesel engines that could charge the 10,000 kg batteries while sailing with special propellers and two shaft generators. Wubbo had great plans to make long voyages and a sustainable vision. Wubbo passed away in 2014, and in 2015 the ship was purchased by the Wadduurzaam Foundation and brought to its new home port of Lauwersoog.

In 2021-2022, the ship was renovated, the diesel engines were removed and replaced by two 30kW electric motors, and a hydrogen installation with two 30kW hydrogen cells was added. Now the ship can sail electrically, and if necessary, the batteries are charged by the two fuel cells.
