Le Français
A classic French tall ship with polar roots
Le Français is a striking three-masted tall ship with a remarkable history. Originally launched in 1948 as Kaskelot, she was built in the style of a traditional Scandinavian expedition ship. After decades of service in the film industry and as a training vessel, she now proudly sails under the French flag from her homeport of Saint-Malo.
At 47 metres long and rigged as a barque, Le Français is a beloved guest at maritime festivals across Europe. Her imposing hull, signature wooden deck, and 32-metre-high masts make her a true eye-catcher among the Tall Ships.
Despite her classic appearance, the ship is equipped with modern technology, including a 360 kW engine and a maximum displacement of 460 tonnes. Her mission? To share maritime heritage, offer sail training, and celebrate the timeless spirit of seafaring.
During SAIL 2025, Le Français will dock in Amsterdam! A perfect opportunity to admire this French icon up close.
